SAFIR: Smart AI-based Farming & Irrigation for Resilience

Project Overview

SAFIR is an open-source smart irrigation management platform designed to help farmers in Savannakhet, Lao PDR respond to water scarcity and climate variability through AI-based drought prediction and soil moisture forecasting.

By providing data-driven insights for irrigation management, SAFIR supports smallholder farmers in improving resilience and productivity, while also promoting efficient water use and informed decision-making by local communities and government stakeholders.

This award represents a meaningful international recognition of IWMI’s efforts to advance sustainable agriculture and water management through technological innovation in the era of climate crisis.

IWMI will continue to expand climate-resilient agricultural solutions and strengthen international cooperation by applying AI, science, and digital technologies to support a more sustainable future.
